MTN Router Login South Africa

By Routers Network team Checked

192.168.0.1

Login Admin Portal

Default login: ZTE 5G: password on the label. Huawei LTE: admin

App: MyMTN app, HUAWEI AI Life

Works only while your phone or laptop is on this router's Wi-Fi or cable. On a phone, turn mobile data off first. If nothing opens, your router uses another address. The page that opens is your router's own; Routers Network never sees what you type there.

Key points

  • The address depends on who made the router: ZTE units open at 192.168.0.1, Huawei units at 192.168.8.1 and the TP-Link Archer MR600 at tplinkmodem.net or 192.168.1.1.
  • ZTE units and the Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 print the admin password on the label or nameplate. The Huawei B618 from Webafrica takes admin in both boxes.
  • The Huawei B612 accepts the password admin once, then makes you pick a new router password before you can go further.
  • MTN says its routers only work with a designated MTN Data SIM, and a 5G router has to be on the approved list or it will not connect.

The MTN router login South Africa customers need depends on who built the box. ZTE 5G routers open at 192.168.0.1 for ZTE and similar routers, Huawei units at 192.168.8.1, and the TP-Link Archer MR600 at tplinkmodem.net. The ZTE models and the Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 print the admin password on their label, while the Huawei B612 and B618 from Webafrica take admin.

Which MTN router do you have?

The label names the maker and model. Match it in the table.

MTN only lets certain 5G routers onto its network. Webafrica publishes the MTN-approved 5G router list. It adds the ZTE G5B and G5C, the Huawei 5G SIC, the Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 3.2 and the Brovi 5G CPE 5 H155-381. No maker or reseller page gives a login for those five, so read the address and password from their label. The list also carries a plain warning: “If your router’s not here, it won’t connect.”

ZTE builds most of the approved models, so the ZTE router page is the next stop for a model not shown here. For Huawei boxes, see the Huawei LTE and 5G router logins.

MTN router login South Africa steps on a phone

Sign in from your phone

  1. Join the router’s Wi-Fi. On ZTE units the name and key are on the same label as the admin password.
  2. Switch mobile data off, so the phone cannot try the address over the MTN network instead of the router.
  3. Open Chrome or Safari and type the address into the address bar, not the Google search box: http://192.168.0.1 on a ZTE, http://192.168.8.1 on a Huawei.
  4. Enter the admin password. The ZTE guides and the B612 sheet ask only for a password; the B618 guide gives a username too.
  5. On a TP-Link MR600, type https://tplinkmodem.net. TP-Link says the privacy warning that appears is normal: tap Advanced, then Proceed.

A common slip is typing the letter L for the number 1, as in “192.168 l 0.1”. The page will not load that way. Huawei owners with a login page that will not open can work through the 192.168.8.1 page for Huawei routers, which covers that address in depth.

MTN router default password

No single password covers every MTN box.

  • Huawei B612 (Webafrica, MTN LTE): no username. The password is admin, printed on the back. Webafrica’s setup sheet then says “NB: You must update the router password to continue further.” Whatever you type there becomes the new login.
  • Huawei B618 (Webafrica, MTN LTE): admin as the username and admin as the password.
  • ZTE models, Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2 and TP-Link MR600: no shared default. Read the label or nameplate, or on the MR600 create an administrator password the first time you open the page.

Four different logins get called “the MTN password”:

LoginWhere you find itWhat it opens
Router admin passwordThe label, or admin on the B612 and B618The settings page at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.8.1
Wi-Fi keyThe same label, next to the Wi-Fi nameLets phones and laptops join the network
MTN Fibre accountYour MTN Fibre account detailsThe “MTN Fibre Login” account page, with no router settings
MyMTN appThe app on your phoneNetwork usage, which MTN says the admin page also shows

The B612 lets you set the admin password and the Wi-Fi key to the same value during setup. For the same split across other makers, see the default router password list.

Change the MTN WiFi name and password

MTN’s own help advises changing the Wi-Fi password regularly, especially if you think someone else is on your network.

Huawei MTN router WiFi password change

After signing in at 192.168.8.1, open Wi-Fi Settings, then Wi-Fi Basic Settings. Type a new Wi-Fi name (SSID) and Wi-Fi password, then tap Save. In the HUAWEI AI Life app, tap the router, then Show more, then Wi-Fi settings.

MTN ZTE router WiFi password change

On the MC801A, select WiFi Settings, change the name and password, and repeat for both the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz network. The G5TS uses the Wi-Fi icon or the Wi-Fi menu: pick Main SSID, then change Network Name (SSID) and Password under Basic Settings. Switch Single SSID off if you want the two bands listed under separate names. Afrihost adds a fix for a Smart TV that will not join: set Security Mode to WPA2-PSK/WPA3-SAE instead of WPA2-PSK.

Sign in at tplinkmodem.net with the password you created. TP-Link’s menu names change between firmware versions, so follow the TP-Link router steps for your screen.

Every phone and laptop has to rejoin with the new key once you save. The general method for any router is on the change WiFi password page.

MTN’s help on optimising home Wi-Fi adds three tips for the same admin page. Pick a Wi-Fi channel with less interference, using a Wi-Fi analyser app to see which channels nearby networks use. Move devices that support it to the 5 GHz band, explained in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz comparison. Reboot the router before you think about a factory reset.

What MTN locks and when to call

Some limits come from MTN or the reseller, and no router setting removes them:

  • Data SIM only. In MTN’s help on getting the strongest network, the router “will only work with a designated MTN Data SIM”, not your phone SIM.
  • Approved routers only. A 5G router missing from the approved list will not connect.
  • The signup address. Webafrica warns that putting its MTN LTE SIM into the router anywhere except the address you registered gets the SIM blocked.
  • Activation time. On Webafrica’s MTN LTE service the light turns blue once MTN activates the SIM, which takes 24 to 48 hours.
  • First start. MTN says a new router may need up to 30 minutes after power-up to connect and update its software.

The APN, the mobile network setting the router uses to go online, differs by reseller even on the same MTN network. Webafrica’s B618 uses ws.dd.fwa, and Afrihost’s MTN profile on the G5TS uses ws.afrihost.fwa.

Call MTN or whoever sold you the SIM if the light is still not blue or white after 48 hours. Call them too if the SIM was blocked or the router is not on the list. MTN’s own help says a router with no connection points to a network outage, for example at towers hit by loadshedding, or to wrong settings on the device. It sends configuration questions to an MTN store. To keep an eye on network usage, MTN points to the MyMTN app or the router’s admin page.

MTN fibre router and MiFi login

Search results can offer the “MTN Fibre Login” page as the MTN router login South Africa fibre customers want. It is not: that page is the sign-in for your MTN Fibre account, and it never shows the Wi-Fi settings. For a fibre router, read the label on the router itself, since MTN’s help pages name no fibre router model or login.

For a pocket MiFi, Huawei prints the admin address and password on the nameplate, and says carrier versions can differ from retail ones. MTN Nigeria’s help gives a different address and password, covered on the MTN Nigeria router login page.

MTN router problems and fixes

"My router doesn't seem to have a connection"

MTN lists two causes: a network outage at the towers near you, for example during loadshedding, or wrong settings on the router. Check the APN against your reseller's value before anything else.

"NB: You must update the router password to continue further"

This is the Huawei B612 asking for a new admin password at first login. Choose one you will remember and write it down; after this, admin no longer works.

"I cannot visit the 5G CPE management web page"

ZTE's own answer for the MC888: type the IP address shown on the label, use only one network adapter on a laptop and turn any proxy off. On a phone, mobile data off does the same job. More causes are on the router page not opening list.

Privacy error on tplinkmodem.net

TP-Link uses a self-signed certificate on the Archer MR600 page. Tap Advanced and continue; the warning is expected.

Network light stays red on a ZTE MC801A

Red means the router is on but not registered on the mobile network. Blue means 3G or 4G, white means 5G. Check the SIM, the activation time and the router's place near a window.

Connected, but the speed is slow

MTN gives three causes. You downloaded more than your plan's Fair Usage Limit, which lowers the top speed for a while. Many people share the router. Or the Wi-Fi is weak in part of the house. Place the router near a window, and for weak rooms MTN suggests a Wi-Fi extender.

The admin password on the label is refused

Someone changed it. Hold the reset hole for about 3 seconds on an MC801A or about 2 seconds on an MC888, then use the label password again. MTN warns that after a reset you have to reconfigure the router, so note your reseller's APN and your Wi-Fi name and key first. The full process, and what a reset erases, is on the factory reset steps page.

Conclusion

Find the maker on the label, open 192.168.0.1 for ZTE or 192.168.8.1 for Huawei, and use the password the label or reseller sheet gives. Change the Wi-Fi key from the menu for your model, and leave SIM and approval problems to MTN or your reseller. Routers from other networks in the region are grouped on the ISP router login hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is my MTN router password the same as my WiFi password?

Usually not. The admin password opens the settings page, and the WiFi key is what your phone types to join. On the Huawei B612 you may choose to make them the same during setup, so try the WiFi key if a changed admin password is refused.

Can I use my own router with an MTN SIM?

Only if MTN approves it. Webafrica's copy of the approved 5G list says a router that is not on it will not connect, so check the model before you buy.

Why does my MTN router not work with my phone SIM?

MTN says its home routers only work with a designated MTN Data SIM. A phone SIM can show you where the signal is strongest, but the router will not go online with it.

I changed the admin password and forgot it. What now?

A factory reset puts back the password printed on the label. Write down your APN and WiFi details first, because the reset clears them as well.
