What a router admin portal is
The admin portal is a small website that lives inside your router. It only answers on your own network, which is why the address looks like a number such as 192.168.1.1 or a name such as tplinkwifi.net instead of a normal web address. From there you change the Wi-Fi name and password, see which devices are connected, and set the internet login your ISP gave you. Routers Network never sees this page or anything you type into it; it opens straight from your router.
How to log in to the admin portal
- Connect your phone or laptop to the router's Wi-Fi, or plug in a network cable. On a phone, turn mobile data off so the phone does not try the internet instead.
- Tap Login Admin Portal above, or type the address in the browser's address bar with
http://in front. - Enter the admin username and password. Most routers print them on a sticker underneath or on the back, often labelled "Admin password" or "Web login".
- If the router asks you to set a new password on first login, choose one you will remember and write it down somewhere safe.
Not sure which address your router uses? Your phone shows it as the Gateway or Router line in the Wi-Fi details. The guide to finding your router's IP address shows where that line is on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
What you can change in the admin portal
Menu names differ by brand and ISP, but the same jobs sit in similar places:
| Task | Where it usually is | Step-by-step guide |
|---|---|---|
| Change the Wi-Fi password | Wireless, WLAN or Wi-Fi, then Security | change the wi-fi password |
| Rename the Wi-Fi network | Wireless or WLAN, then Basic settings | rename the wi-fi network |
| Set up a guest network | Wireless, then Guest network | set up a guest network |
| Block or limit a device | Parental controls, Access control or MAC filter | block or limit a device |
| Change the admin password | System, Management or Administration | change the admin password |
| Pick 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz | Wireless, then Advanced or Band settings | pick 2.4 ghz or 5 ghz |
Save each change before you leave the page. Changing the Wi-Fi name or password disconnects every phone and TV, so join them again with the new details.
Admin portal login problems and fixes
| What you see | Usual cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The page never loads | You are on mobile data or another Wi-Fi | Join the router's Wi-Fi, turn mobile data off and try again. |
| Google search results open | The address went into the search box | Type it in the address bar at the top, starting with http://. |
| "Connection not private" warning | The browser tried https | Use http:// in front of the address, or accept the warning for your own router only. |
| "Incorrect password" | The Wi-Fi key was used, or someone changed the login | Use the admin login from the label, not the Wi-Fi key. |
| Locked for a few minutes | Too many wrong tries | Wait for the timer, then try the label login once. |
| An ISP billing page opens | That is the ISP's account site, not the router | Use the router's own address from the label. |
When nobody knows the admin password, a factory reset brings back the login printed on the label. It also erases your Wi-Fi name, password and the ISP's internet settings, so read what a factory reset erases before you press the pinhole. The default router password list covers the common brands and ISPs.
Keep the admin portal safe
- Replace the label password with your own as soon as you sign in for the first time.
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 for the Wi-Fi and a key of at least 12 characters.
- Leave the ISP's super-admin account alone. Many ISPs lock it, and changing it can cut your internet.
- Turn off remote management unless you need it, so the portal only answers at home.
